Why Your Smoke Alarm Keeps Going Off and How to Fix It

A smoke alarm that keeps sounding without an obvious cause is frustrating for tenants — and if they silence or remove it, your property is left unprotected. Understanding why alarms trigger falsely is the first step to fixing the problem properly.

6 Common Reasons a Smoke Alarm Keeps Going Off

1. Steam and Humidity

Steam from a shower or boiling kettle can enter the sensing chamber of an alarm and trigger it — especially if the alarm is mounted close to a bathroom door or kitchen. This is common with ionisation alarms, which are more sensitive to small particles including steam. Relocating the alarm slightly further from the steam source can help.

2. Dust and Insects in the Chamber

Dust buildup inside the sensing chamber can cause random triggering. Small insects entering the chamber can also set off the alarm. Annual cleaning is part of the mandatory smoke alarm check for this exact reason.

3. Low or Dying Battery

A low battery typically causes a periodic "chirp" (usually one beep every 30–60 seconds) rather than a full alarm. If you're hearing a full alarm intermittently, the battery level is unlikely to be the cause — but a chirping alarm still needs the battery replaced promptly.

4. Cooking Fumes

Burnt toast, high-heat cooking, or poorly ventilated grilling can set off a nearby alarm. If this happens regularly, consider whether the alarm is too close to the kitchen. Current building guidelines recommend alarms not be placed within 300mm of a wall and at least 1 metre from cooking appliances where possible.

5. End of Useful Life

Smoke alarms older than 10 years from their manufacture date are required to be replaced. Aging sensing chambers can become erratic and trigger without cause. Check the manufacture date inside the unit — if it's over 10 years old, replace it immediately.

6. Interconnected Alarm Triggered Elsewhere

If your alarms are interconnected (all sound when one triggers), you'll hear alarms throughout the property even when the issue is only near one unit. Identify which alarm is actually detecting a signal by checking which one has its red LED flashing — that's the triggered unit.

Important for Landlords

Never advise tenants to remove, disconnect, or cover a smoke alarm to stop nuisance activations. This is a breach of your obligations and creates serious fire risk. Instead, investigate the cause and fix it properly.

What Should Tenants Do During a False Alarm?

  • ✓Briefly fan the alarm with a towel to clear steam or smoke particles
  • ✓Open windows and doors to ventilate the area
  • ✓Press the "hush" or silence button if available — this temporarily silences the alarm for 10 minutes
  • ✓Do not remove the battery or cover the alarm permanently
  • ✓Report persistent false alarms to the landlord or property manager promptly
