Why Are Clearance Requirements Important? #

Gas cooking appliances must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions. If the manufacturer’s instructions specify greater clearances than the minimum standard, the larger clearance must be used.
Overhead Clearance Requirements #
The required clearance depends on whether the installation is new or an existing installation.
New Installations (from 30 March 2023) #
For new kitchens and major renovations:
- Rangehood: Minimum 650 mm from the top of the cooking vessel supports (trivets), unless the manufacturer specifies a greater distance.
- Exhaust fan: Minimum 750 mm.
- Any downward-facing combustible surface: Must not be less than 450 mm, and additional protection may be required where the surface is below the prescribed clearance.
Existing Installations #
For many existing kitchens or replacement appliances:
- Rangehood: Minimum 600 mm, unless the appliance or rangehood manufacturer specifies a greater clearance.
- Exhaust fan: Minimum 750 mm.
- Absolute minimum: No overhead surface should be closer than 450 mm.
Side and Rear Clearances #
Clearances are also required beside and behind a gas cooking appliance.
These distances depend on factors such as:
- Appliance design
- Manufacturer instructions
- Whether nearby surfaces are combustible
- Whether protective materials have been installed
Correct side and rear clearances help prevent excessive heat transfer to cabinetry and walls.
Freestanding Gas Cookers #
Freestanding gas cookers should have sufficient space to allow:

- Access for servicing
- Protection of the flexible gas hose (where fitted)
- Prevention of crushing or damage to gas connections
Where a flexible hose is used, an approved restraint system may also be required depending on the installation.
