The Main Earth and Neutral (MEN) connection, commonly known as the MEN link, is an important part of an electrical installation’s earthing system.
It provides the connection between the electrical installation’s neutral and earthing systems at the main switchboard. If the MEN link is missing, damaged or incorrectly installed, the electrical installation may not operate as intended and can present a serious safety concern.
What Is the MEN Link? #
The MEN link is a connection located at the main switchboard that establishes the required connection between the neutral bar and the main earthing system.
It forms an important part of the electrical protection system by helping provide a path for fault current so protective devices can operate correctly when an electrical fault occurs.
The Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules, AS/NZS 3000, contain requirements for the MEN connection. The Detector Inspector reference identifies Clause 5.3.5 as the relevant requirement.

How Is the MEN Connection Checked? #
An electrician can inspect the main switchboard and carry out appropriate electrical testing to verify the condition of the earthing system.
Energy Safe Victoria identifies continuity of the earthing system and earth resistance of the main earthing conductor, protective earthing conductors and bonding conductors among the mandatory tests associated with electrical installation verification.
During a Victorian rental electrical safety check, inspection and testing is intended, as far as reasonably practicable, to determine whether the electrical installation and its equipment are in a safe condition for continued use.
MEN Link and Victorian Rental Properties #
Victorian rental providers must ensure an electrical safety check is conducted every two years by a licensed or registered electrician. The check covers the electrical installations, fixtures and fittings at the property.
If an electrical safety check identifies a missing MEN connection or another earthing defect, the electrician should document the issue and recommend the appropriate corrective work.
Electrical repairs should be carried out by a Registered Electrical Contractor or appropriately licensed electrician.

The MEN connection is part of the property’s electrical earthing system.
Do not attempt to install, remove or modify an MEN link yourself.
Electrical work should only be carried out by appropriately licensed electrical professionals. Energy Safe Victoria specifically warns that unlicensed and unqualified people must not undertake electrical work.
